Silas Burnham Terry was a famous clockmaker who lived from 1807 until 1876. He was trained by his father Eli Terry, who was a very famous clockmaker in his time. Silas Burnham Terry made his own business in 1831 in the city of Terrysville, CT. Here, he created wall clocks and shelf clocks that were weight driven. He later got into spring driven clocks, which bore his own name. This lasted until 1852, with some off and on financial difficulties, especially in the late 1840s.
The firm went bankrupt, but was rebuilt later on and led a precarious life. Terry never had enough capitol, and lived loan to loan. The business finally went belly up in 1880, years after Silas' death. The operation was then purchased by a group of investors. This firm was successful for a few years, and then failed again. This time, the name was changed to Russell & Jones Clock Company, and the Terry clock company was no more.
