Shelf clocks are called shelf clock because they were made to be kept on a shelf. These clocks were generally lighter than other heavier clocks, were of relatively simple design, and were fairly inexpensive compared to some of the other choices out there. Of course, they were mostly cased in wood with some metal trim, and some of them sported designs or images on the front for decorative purposes. The clocks ranged in style from plain and practical to gaudy and spectacular, but most of the clocks of this kind that were purchased back in the early 19th century were of a more simple design. The case designs for these clocks were really as broad and diverse as the imaginations of the builders. Since the clocks were sort of small and would be sitting on a shelf, this left a lot of room for style tweaking, which happened a lot.
