Pillar & Scroll Clocks

Pillar and scroll clocks were a type of clock developed by Eli Terry. They were a lower end clock that still had some fancy elements of style, and they became all the rage in the post War of 1812 world that was the United States. In fact, the clocks were so popular that Seth Thomas paid Terry $1,000 for a license to make the clocks. Other clockmakers pirated the design without shame. The clocks were so popular that people all over the eastern United States bought them. Clocks were very scarce these days, and even though money was scarce as well, people were willing to pay for the inexpensive, beautiful clock that Eli Terry called the Pillar and Scroll clock. These clocks are great collectors' items, and since so many were produced with such good craftsmanship, many of them are still around in good working order.
