The New Haven Clock company was formed by clockmaker Hiram Camp back in 1853. The firm was originally established to supply clock movements to the Jerome Manufacturing Company, which at that time was the largest clock making operation in the world. After Jerome went bankrupt three years later, the New Haven Clock company purchased the Jerome operation.
By the time 1860 rolled around, the firm had over 315 employees, and was making 170,000 clocks per year. Even though the old Jerome factory was destroyed by fire in 1866, a newer and better brick building was put up. This factory still survives to this day, and has been added onto many times. The workforce of the company grew to over 500 employees, and that same year (1880), nearly half a million dollars worth of clocks were produced. The company survived until 1960, and its facilities were then sold at a public auction.
