Mission clocks were designed out of wood or metal, and are very sought after collectors pieces as far as clocks are concerned. These clocks were generally constructed to be open aired, meaning that the moving components of the clocks were usually visible from the sides, top, or even the front. Sometimes the clocks were built from very crude wood, and sometimes more elaborate designs were chosen. It was not uncommon for some of these clocks to bear symbols and images for decorative purposes, just as it was not out of the ordinary for the clock to include some kind of sculpture of figure on the top. But mostly the clocks were simple, open to the air, and down to earth. Of course there were the showy models, but these seem to have been few as opposed to the number of plain, practical models produced.
