Lantern clocks were unique clock designs that were actually clocks built to look like lanterns. These clocks were either made of wood or metal, but generally both were used in the construction of the clock to some degree. These timepieces were pretty good timekeepers, especially the late ones. They also sported very beautiful brass trim usually, and were made to be both eye pleasing and somewhat portable. Some of them had covers that went over the face, but generally the clock was all you got. Some of these clocks also contained a thermometer, but this was generally not the case. The lantern clocks of the late 17th century are considered some of the most beautiful clocks ever made. It is really amazing that the designs of these clocks were so beautiful, despite the lack of technological advancement available at the time. Most of the famous clockmakers made lantern clocks, even in the United States.
