The F. Kroeber Clock Company, based in New York City, New York, was founded by a man known as Florenz Friederick Martin Kroeber. He was born in 1840 in a city called Paderborn in Westphalia, Germany. Though his early years were spent in the city of Cologne, his parents brought the family over to America in 1850 and settled in New York City. "Florence" Kroeber, as they called him, began working in clocks when he was 19 years old.
Kroeber soon took over a small firm of his own, and was in business for himself by the year 1864. In 1868, Kroeber went into partnership with Nickolas Mueller, and by 1870, was making his own cases. His operation was successful for about 25 years. The business went into bankruptcy in January of 1904, and it personally ruined Kroeber. He died in May of 1911 of tuberculosis.
