The Gebr Junghans Clock Company was founded by Erhard Junghans with Franz Xaver back in 1861. The company was founded in the Black Forest of Germany. Although Junghans was originally planning to follow in his father's footsteps as a porcelain maker, he started his own business around the year 1861.
The company continued to prosper even after Junghan died, as his sons took control of the plant. In fact, his son Arthur took control in 1870, and the company went farther under him than ever before. By 1903, the Jungham Clock Company was the biggest in the world! After the war the company was set back, but even today the remnants of Junghan's factory still produces clocks for Diehl. This factory is actually the largest in Germany. Even though American clockmakers really hurt German clock companies, Germany, after embracing more modern factory methods, has once again become a leading name in clockwork.
