Chauncey Jerome was one of the most prominent early clockmakers in the United states. He was born on June 10th in 1793, and died in April of 1868. Jerome spent his entire life in the clock making business and achieved great success as a promoter. As a clock making apprentice, he began building tall case clocks, but later he produced shelf clock cases that achieved a great amount of popularity.
Jerome also invented the Bronze looking glass clock in 1825. This invention revolutionized the clock making industry, because they could be built cheaper and sold for more than the standard cases. Jerome belonged to many firms, including: Jerome, Thompson & Co, Jeromes & Darrow, C&N Jerome, Jeromes, Gilbert & Grant and finally Jerome & Co. Jerome made many incredible clocks, even selling them in England in addition to the United States, which was a feat because labor in England was cheaper at that time.
