Colonial was a pretty popular clock making company. During the wars, the company built clock cases and imported movements from other companies. Sometimes, collectors can have trouble figuring out the exact year that their Colonial clock was made, because the dates do not seem to match up. This is because when Colonial ordered serial number labels, the first two digits represented the year. So, sometimes they would over-order, but go ahead and use the labels the next year as well. So, if you have a Colonial clock, the year is approximate, not necessarily right on.
Colonial used a large variety of movements made by other companies. These companies included such names as New Haven, Herchede, and Gilbert. They used primarily German movements, though not all of their movements came from Germany. Names like Winterhalder, Urgos, Mauthe, Gerbruder Jauch, Erhardt Jauch, Hermle, and Kienninger, for example, were some names you might have heard working for Colonial.
