Black mantel clocks were very popular, and were produced the most, back in the time between 1850 and 1920. These clocks typically were about 12 inches high, 7 inches deep, and 16 inches wide give or take. Many of these clocks were cased with wood which was stained black. This cover was glossy, and was stained using a process that was patented by Edward Ingraham. The dial was generally centered in the middle of the clock, and it had two key wind openings. These were for both the time and the strike time.
These clocks had a certain element of style to them that became very popular. They generally had one or more columns on both sides of the dial for decoration, and the top of the cases varied between flat and curved. These clocks also usually sported some painted on decorations on the front, like trim or a design.
