A banjo clock is a clock with a banjo shaped body. It is an American clock, and was invented by Simon Willard. It was patented in 1802, and featured a long waisted body and a lack of a striking mechanism, which was different for the time. Only around 4,000 of these types of clocks were produced by Simon Willard, but the style was widely copied by many other members of his family. There are also many variants to the banjo clock, some of which include bodies that are diamond shaped and/or square in shape. Generally the face panel opened on these clocks, enabling you to get at the dial and hands in case you needed to make adjustments. The original banjo clocks made by Willard himself are considered extremely valuable, and are fine collectors items. Many collectors have enjoyed these clocks, even though the style is sort of out in our modern times.
