A balloon clock is a bracket clock that has a waisted or balloon shaped case. These types of clocks were very popular in England during the late 18th century and during the early 19th century. Many believe that these clocks are descendents of the French style clocks that were once built out of satinwood or mahogany. These had either a convex or a flat dial, and were considered very fashionable. Balloon clocks are mostly decorative, using their unique style to set them apart from more plain clocks. Often they were decorated with fine little trims of metal or wood, making them even more eye appealing. They are still popular even today, both as antique art forms and even as a popular style of modern clocks. These clocks were also very effective time keepers, especially the ones built by the bigger, more experienced and professional companies.
